What A Great Idea

A student asked me a question the other day and it really got me thinking.

“Do you get paid more for giving homework?” she asked.

“Huh,” was my surprised response, thinking I had not heard the question correctly.

“Do you get paid more for giving out homework?” she repeated, and this time a couple other students chimed in “Yes, we heard you get paid for giving us homework”

“Why would you even think that?” I answered, a wry smile on my face, but in the back of my mind, I was thinking about it.

Hmmmmmmmm, paid for assigning homework - maybe $5 per assignment per student?

This might add up, I was thinking. I teach four classes and have about 60 students in those classes. That’s $300 a night. If I assigned homework seven days a week, that’d be an extra $2,100 a week. If I could give them two assignments per night, I could double my money. This could really add up.

Wow, what a great idea. Brilliant. Ferrari, here I come.

Now, all I have to do is get the Board of Directors to agree and...

“Do you?” begged a chorus of middle schoolers, interrupting my thoughts.

“Uh, no, not at all,” I said. “Trust me, if I got paid for giving out homework, you’d be doing 12 hours of it a night.”

But, what a great idea...

  1. Wow, If I needed money I would totally just give out tons of Homework for the money. Unfortunately that is not how the US works.

  3. True, this would get you a Ferrari, but at what cost? This would kill the economy, if teachers where paid for amounts of assignments. Loading more work onto the children would also result in less sleep, and that means less healthy kids. This concept is interesting, but is a few more bucks worth the pain of others?

  4. If we got 12 hours of homework per class, that means on average we would have 72 hours of homework per night, because we have 6 classes. There are only 16.45 hours between 3:30pm on one day and 8:15am on the next. I would be discouraged quickly by simply looking at my planner. Where do you start on 72 hours of homework? What do you choose to do first? After I saw all the missing assignments in JumpRope, I would get even more worried. There is a certain level of motivation necessary to do your homework. Overall, no one would ever want to even try on their homework, because we would know that we would never succeed. Then where would American education be?

  6. Quite true, but it is a problem that teachers are severely under paid in this country, so maybe if they were given a dollar for every page of homework, it would help change the way teachers do their classes, however, us students get an average of two hours every night for just our core classes, then if we add the Language and related arts, its around three hours. So if, say a teacher was in need of money real fast, they might just give children a ton of homework, like you said in your example. But the Child's sleep schedule would just be destroyed after a few days, then take the amount of teachers that could possibly do this. Currently the amount of teachers in just massachusetts is 69,342, for only public schools. then take say the amount of homework they might assign a night for 3 dollars a page, for 2 pages a night the entire state would be paying an additional 416,052 dollars a night, which would soon cause our state to have an economical collapse. Is that the price your willing to pay for a car that can't even carry groceries?

  12. there would be lots of complaints if teachers got paid to give hw because if u add the number of students multiply it by the number of days we would get hw then multiply that by how much they get per hw assignment teachers would be rich. also its not fair to students because (in the words of Brent Rivera ) teachers get paid to be at school we are there by force !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) ha-ha

  14. That seems interesting. If teachers made that much money, I might just leave school and become a first grade teacher. Haha the kids wouldn't even have to do their homework and I would get money. I am just kidding though. If teachers made that much money, probably everybody would become a teacher and we would have nothing else!
